It’s Labor Day weekend, and, for me, there are several reasons to celebrate. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer.

The first Monday of September marks Labor Day in the United States. It’s a “day off for the working man” and is observed as a federal holiday. Whether your child is attending daycare or is starting to go to school, a backpack is typically at the top of list with school supplies. But finding a suitable backpack requires more than just the latest color or character trend. It should be ergonomically sound and comfortable for your kid. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a backpack filled with gear should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of a child’s weight, although the lower percentage is what is preferred for younger kids especially. In addition, doctors and hospitals report treating thousands of injuries each year due to backpack, so your child’s health and safety needs to be a top consideration when choosing a backpack.

Here are some quick tips to look for when choosing your child’s backpack this year:

• Consider the size and age of your child when starting the process. There are toddler-sized “mini” backpacks, tailored for kids who go to daycare. Remember that there is no such thing as “one size fits all” when picking a backpack for your child.
• Choose the style that works best for your kid. Today’s options have never been greater, with slings and messenger-style bags as options to a traditional backpack. These types of designs are typically better suited to older kids vs. younger ones.
• Keep comfort as a priority. Look for contoured and padded shoulder straps, a padded back or one with mesh fabric to lessen the “sweat factor,” and for straps on the sides to adjust and tighten a backpack as needed.
• Check features and make sure you get what you really need. If your child is supposed to bring a water bottle to daycare or school every day, be sure there is a sufficient side pocket that allows a normal-size water bottle to be placed within the space without falling out. Multiple pockets may or may not be needed, depending on your child’s age, but make sure zippers work well and don’t stick.
• Look for durable, colorfast and waterproof designs. Cute cotton styles may work for young kids, but will often not last a full season with school-aged children. Reflective trim can be another plus for parents.

Televisions have an issue called Screen Burn-in. It happens when your television shows a still image or an icon for so long that its “ghost” remains on the screen. It is premature aging of pixel cells due to static images. For example, if a stock ticker or a news crawl continuously runs along the bottom of your display, that strip may be burned into your set.

LCD technology is not prone to screen “burn-in” or “ghosting” due to the nature of the technologies “twisting crystals.” But with plasma displays, static images will begin to “burn-in,” or permanently etch the color being displayed into the glass display element.

The time it takes for this to occur depends greatly on the anti burn-in technology of the manufacturer. Recent improvements by plasma manufacturers have certainly extended the time it takes to burn in a plasma pixel cell they have also included screen savers to prevent static images from ghosting the screen. So while pausing a DVD for 15 mins may not leave a permanent ‘ghost’ on your screen it can be washed out with grey static, leaving static images for longer periods of time will eventually lead to permanent burn-in. It is said that plasma technology is improving their anti burn-in times really fast and this is not so much a concern as it was a year ago.

I feel strongly that in this day and age we really need to consider how much power and resources we can save in our day to day life. With environmental and green issues becoming increasingly important, it’s reassuring to know that your choice of large screen TV is ecologically sound. Because LCDs use florescent back lighting to produce images, they require substantially less power to operate than plasma TVs do. LCD displays consume about half the power that plasma displays consume. The reason: Plasmas use a lot of electricity to light each and every pixel you see on a screen - even the dark ones. Though plasma manufacturers have improved voltage consumption requirements a plasma TV will consume around a third more power for the same size display.
