Whether your child is attending daycare or is starting to go to school, a backpack is typically at the top of list with school supplies. But finding a suitable backpack requires more than just the latest color or character trend. It should be ergonomically sound and comfortable for your kid. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a backpack filled with gear should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of a child’s weight, although the lower percentage is what is preferred for younger kids especially. In addition, doctors and hospitals report treating thousands of injuries each year due to backpack, so your child’s health and safety needs to be a top consideration when choosing a backpack.

Here are some quick tips to look for when choosing your child’s backpack this year:

Consider the size and age of your child when starting the process. There are toddler-sized “mini” backpacks, tailored for kids who go to daycare. Remember that there is no such thing as “one size fits all” when picking a backpack for your child.
Choose the style that works best for your kid. Today’s options have never been greater, with slings and messenger-style bags as options to a traditional backpack. These types of designs are typically better suited to older kids vs. younger ones.
Keep comfort as a priority. Look for contoured and padded shoulder straps, a padded back or one with mesh fabric to lessen the “sweat factor,” and for straps on the sides to adjust and tighten a backpack as needed.
Check features and make sure you get what you really need. If your child is supposed to bring a water bottle to daycare or school every day, be sure there is a sufficient side pocket that allows a normal-size water bottle to be placed within the space without falling out. Multiple pockets may or may not be needed, depending on your child’s age, but make sure zippers work well and don’t stick.
Look for durable, colorfast and waterproof designs. Cute cotton styles may work for young kids, but will often not last a full season with school-aged children. Reflective trim can be another plus for parents.

How many children do you plan on having? - If you plan on having more than one child you may consider getting a multiple occupancy stroller. Also, you may consider buying a higher quality stroller that will last long enough for a second or third child.
Your lifestyle - Will you be taking short trips with the baby? Long trips? Will you be taking your baby jogging and exercising with you
Seatbelt & Restraint system - The buckles should be easy for you to latch and unlatch, yet comfortable for your baby or child. The belt should fit snugly around your baby’s waist and have crotch straps that loop into the waist belt to prevent him or her from slipping out. For jogging strollers a five-point harness is more desirable to keep your baby more secure on rough terrain.
Adjustable seat and canopy - A stroller with an adjustable seat that fully reclines is a must for infants that cannot support their heads yet and is comfortable for children who want to nap on the go. An adjustable canopy is a plus to protect your baby from the sun, rain, wind or cold.
What is the frame material made from? - Strollers can be made of plastic, aluminum, steel or a combination of materials. Strollers made of steel or aluminum will usually last longer but there is the added weight. The lightweight strollers with more plastic are easy to move around, but keep in mind they may not last long.
Washable fabric - Be sure the stroller has removable fabric that can be easily cleaned. Most strollers have removable seats that can be cleaned.
Storage area - If you’re going on a long outing, you will want storage area for all the stuff you will be toting around.
