Linda at Get Elastic, the ecommerce blog, wrote a great post summarizing social shopping here. dealplumber was right there in the social deals category. Thanks, Linda.

I think social shopping, especially social deal finding, is going to change the way people shop. More of you will be able to find very good bargains with very less effort - social deals is going to beat shopping search engines as the human element is critical is evaluating how good a deal really is and we are pioneering this trend at dealplumber. Stay tuned as we announce a whole suite of new features we have recently added to dealplumber.

Woohoo! We just pushed the 1.1 version of dealplumber live, this weekend.

The last 4-6 months has been a great learning experience for us, as we looked at the site’s usage pattern, user feedback and merchant transactions. The 1.1 version has a number of interesting features which will allow us to scale the site going forward while keeping it useful, quick and valuable for our users. Here are some of the key updates:

* Categories: We have moved from a purely tag-based system to a category driven approach which will allow the deals to be structured in a manner that users look for deals. This was one of the key feedbacks from our initial users. It seems like most deal seeking users like to browse for deals, rather than search for them. The browsing experience is a lot more easier with categories and sub categories that you are already familiar with.
* Post a Deal: The deal posting form is streamlined to make it easier for all you dealplumber contributors to get your best deals posted faster than ever before.
* How good is the deal really?: We obssess about finding ways for enabling users to get the best deals. Many times we have noticed that the deal price is higher than the total lowest price on Shopping.com. So we got our engineers to show you the current lowest price on Shopping.com for any deal item so you make the right buy. You can compare prices as well to see what your favorite retailer is selling that item for. We have more deal intelligence coming your way. Stay tuned.
* Saving you more across all your buying needs: We added a bunch of newer categories to allow the dealplumber community to share deals on credit cards, online subscriptions, air tickets and a lot more. We expect these new categories to help users to save more with all their purchases.

Take a look and let us know if you have any questions. We will be adding more features in the coming weeks and I will keep you posted.

Save more!

The weekend was busy. While we took a breather to map out the road ahead, we heard from one of users that she has earned an affiliate commission from amongst the deals she shared on dealplumber. The first community ka-ching on dealplumber. The we heard from another user. More ka-ching. I was more than glad to see the early response and it does, more than anything, validate our vision as we aggressively pursure our path forward. Its a long road ahead, and we are ready for it.
The other note I got this weekend was from a friend, whom I had emailed about dealplumber going live:

dealplumber seems to be done well and addresses a very real need. Congrats on going live! One suggestion: –removed for competitive reasons–

Two things. One is that, another user felt like a real need was addressed. Second, that the feature he mentioned is in the works already, but it shows that our users are obviously ahead of us, which means we have to run faster. Stay tuned and I will let you know as we refine some features, introduce new ones and implement our spam control strategy.

Reviews & Feedback  Vaibhav July 19

Its been an exciting 48 hours since launch. We have all been monitoring the site, getting the word out, and connecting with partners and mapping the road the ahead. Going live was the first big milestone, but in a lot of ways, our real challenging journey begins now. We are happy to see the early reviews coming in from the blogsphere and are including the suggestions in our roadmap. Here is a quick look at some of the reviews of dealplumber:

Pete @ Mashable:

I think Dealplumber has done a good job in a number of ways: it fulfils a real need, it’s simply designed and they’re leveraging the community to help with promotion. It’s not a new idea by any means, but I think the execution is commendable.

Sid @ rev2.org:

I think as a new startup in this timeframe, Dealplumber have got a lot of things right. For starters they’ve made the RSS feeds significantly visible in places, plan to launch an API soon (which is great to see), have a reasonable UI and interface, and they’ve given contributers a good incentive to contribute. If I was someone looking for deals I’d go there and if I was someone looking to give people deals in return for a tiny share then I’d certainly go there, so there’s something in it for everyone.

RotorBlog:

Another, and I think also very nice, project is Dealplumber. It offers more or less the same search features, but there is some more services that is very good for users - subscribe to deals via RSS, share deals & earn and others.

PostBubble:

As far as a user looking for value/coupons, this site should take the whole idea to the next level. Seamus McCauley mentions the idea of “smart aggregation” and that’s really what Dealplumber is bringing to this type of site. One problem that everybody faces is having to shop around for deals and while solving that problem is somewhat lofty, there is certainly something to be said about a site that will at least go in that direction.

ShoutBlog:

I would place dealplumber as the current leader. While both have similar features, such as expiring soon coupons and most recent deals, I find the interface of dealplumber to be much more user friendly. dealspl.us’s staple is their digg style plus rating system, which I like, and I think it will be well received among users as their site grows. dealplumber seems to have a much more extensive database of deals and products, which is surprising because they were launched later dealspl.us.

The immediate feedback from the blogosphere is what makes it so valuable for any consumer Internet startup today. All these reviews and the comments on those posts are great inputs as we introduce new features and execute heads-down. Thanks to everyone for contributing with posts as well as comments and stay tuned.

dealplumber is LIVE!  Vaibhav July 17

dealplumber is LIVE! We took the veils off at 12:01AM Pacific Time on Monday, July 17th 2006 which marks the culmination of 6 months of our laser-focused efforts to (aim to) bring a truly new dimension to the online deals and discounts landspace.

When I registered the domain on June 10th, 2004, I was sure of one thing - the deals and coupons space is huge but equally fragmented, making it very difficult for users to get access to the latest and best deals going on. Only the diligent users who have the patience to search and scour for deals, benefitted, while most others (including me - I am frugal but I value my time more than a few dollars of savings) gave up and just bought whatever product or service they needed after a quick comparison shopping search, which doesn’t bring out the best deals going on at any time. Even the diligent deal finders found that they did not know of some deals and coupons that their friends and family knew of. The situation is still the same and may be worse as the fragmentation has grown and added to the information overload.

The deals landscape is made of lots of tiny islands of deal intelligence with no communication between them, which I believe, is a loose-loose situation. The users are loosing on some really cool bargains. The merchants are loosing out on new customer acquisition (and hence their campaign ROI) and affiliates are loosing out by not being able to get their hard-found-deals to more users looking for them.

This is the exact problem we aim to solve at dealplumber. dealplumber.com will bring together deals and coupons and promotions from all users, affiliates and merchants for all users looking for deals & discounts. If you know what you are going to buy, dealplumber is the place you need to spend 30 seconds on, to find an associated deal and save … and feel smart! Affiliates can post their best deals - “with your own affiliate IDs/links” to drive a stronger distribution of your deals online, and see increased commission streams. Sorry, no xml deal uploads and no spam accepted. Merchants can use dealplumber in a number of ways and we’ll be working with you closely in the coming weeks and months.

More “Good” Deals
With our community of users bringing the best deals from across the Internet, you can (soon) be confident that you are seeing the best that is gonig on, in terms of deals and promotions. Ofcourse, we believe more users will post more deals as we provide them the incentive to use thier own affiliate links and hence earn commissions along the way. Save and let save … & earn!

Search
Our tag-and-keyword search will present you a relevant deal within seconds. All it takes to save money now, is a few seconds. Try our deal search now.

Latest Deals
The dealplumber community is constantly reporting new deals coming up and a quick browse on the latest deals section might be a 30-second daily chore you might want to consider to save, while you shop.

Saved Coupons
Create a free account with us (it takes 30 seconds … and yes, a lot of things take just 30 seconds on dealplumber :-) ) and you can save discount coupons along the way. For things like domain registrations, printer cartridges, stationary and other recurring shopping items, a saved coupon in your dealplumber account is just the way to save quick and easy.

Deal Pages
User experience has been one central theme as we conceptualized and designed and built dealplumber. We have created deal pages (like Yellow Pages) to quickly give you access to deals and promotions on specific products. Check the deal pages for laptops, laptops under $1000 and so on for a quick preview. Was that fast? Easy? Useful? Anything you didn’t like? Let us know.

Faster with Grid View
For super deal processors, a Grid View may be just what you were looking for. Take a peek here and let us kow what you think.

dealplumber is in its infancy and we hope to grow it bigger and smarter with your participation, support and feedback. So come on over and find some good deals & save, and share the ones you know of.

If you are an affiliate, you can get a lot more outreach and exposure for your deals by posting them on dealplumber (the links are your own affiliate links). Let us know if you have any questions by sending an email to powerdealers [at] dealplumber.com.

Merchants, we want to work with you to popularize your best deals of the week, day and hour. We aim to work very closely with online merchants to bring your best promotions to our users. You can start by creating a free dealplumber account or email us at merchantpartners [at] dealplumber.com and we’ll set you up.

Stay tuned as we release several new features in the coming weeks and months that will make finding a good deal, easier and easier and easier!

Cheers,
the frugal team @ dealplumber!
